The Ghost Brand Epidemic in Mowers & Security
Our analysis of popular online marketplaces reveals a staggering 29.0% Ghost Brand rate in categories like Lawn Mowers and Home Security Systems. Of the 186 brands sampled, 54 were rated ZERO for Trust, Reliability, and Customer Service due to lack of website, customer support channels and published return policies.
A low purchase price in these categories is often a "Market Trap." These Ghost Brands exist exclusively within marketplace ecosystems, lacking independent websites, direct support channels, or verifiable return policies. They are often designed for transience—easily "stood up" to capture volume and "taken down" when poor reviews or product failures mount. While a product may boast competitive specs, the absence of Brand Strength may mean lack of support from the seller. We have winnowed over 850 models to isolate the Exceptional performers that offer a genuine return on investment from the Ghost Brands that represent a high risk of Buyer’s Remorse.

1. What Exactly is a "Ghost Brand"?
We gave a brand a Brand Strength Score of Zero—classifying it as a Ghost Brand—if it failed to check the basic boxes that any real company should pass:
- No Website: They don't have an independent website, a web domain, or any online presence outside of the marketplace where they sell.
- No Customer Support: There is no phone number, no email address, and no help desk to contact.
- No Real Return Policy: They don't offer a clear return policy that goes beyond the bare minimum required by Amazon or Walmart.
- Gibberish Names: They often use random names like TURGLRPE or Saiuwa instead of a registered, recognizable business name.
- No Logo Often lack Logos and standard branding and identification.
2. The Private-Label Shell Game
How did we end up with a 29.0% Ghost Brand rate in lawn mowers and security systems? It comes down to how modern online supply chains work.
These brands don't design, build, or test the products they sell. The process is completely hands-off:
Because these sellers are just middlemen sitting behind a computer, they have absolutely no control over the quality of the product. If the overseas factory decides to use cheaper parts or cut corners halfway through a production run, the seller wouldn't even know.
Even worse, if a product line starts getting terrible reviews or high return rates, the seller faces no real penalty. They can simply delete that storefront, pick a new random name, and start selling the exact same inventory under a new listing a few days later.
3. Real-World Evidence: One Mower, Multiple Sellers
During our analysis of Self-Propelled Gas Lawn Mowers, our analysts caught this shell game happening in real time. We found 13 different brands selling the exact same lawn mower. They used slightly different photoshopped versions of the same image, the same exact internal parts, and identical engine specs.
A quick search for Gas Lawn Mower, 141cc on Amazon highlights the trend.
Even though these mowers likely came off the very same assembly line, the multiple sellers vary the prices by more than 31%.
This data exposes the illusion of choice online. Shoppers think they are comparing different tools from different manufacturers, but they are actually just looking at the exact same hardware with different price tags slapped on by different drop-shippers.
